Five-star Game Field, a special house in Perthshire, Scotland
Words by Scottish Moments
In mid-December we were invited to come and stay a few days in a wonderful house in Perthshire. The house, called Gamefield, located not far from Crieff, on Ochtertyre Estate. I already knew before that it would be a fantastic house because I had seen some pictures, but you know that pictures often portray things from the most advantageous angle so I did not take anything out in advance.
It was afternoon when we arrived and it had begun to darken. We turned off the main road and onto a smaller road. According to the instructions, we would drive up to a big gate and when we did it was opened automatically and we drove into the driveway. The exterior of the main house looked like a mix of Scandinavian and American style and we were greeted by Audrey, an elegant lady in middle age turned out to be the owner and the builder Williams mother-in-law and also the gatekeeper.
If the outside reminded me of Scandinavia, so we were back in Scotland as soon as we stepped through the door. The decoration of the house consisted namely of Scotland typical fabrics like leather chairs, fireplaces, rustic ornaments with natural theme, etc. The hall we entered was huge, with bright tiled floors and a grand fireplace. A grand staircase leading to the upper floor and behind the fireplace was a large dining room with open plan and another fireplace crackled välkommnande. Audrey showed us into the kitchen which, combined with one of the house’s living room also had an open floor plan. The Aga kitchen was hot and she told us what we needed to know about the house before she said goodbye.
Yes, our Gamefield experience was really something special and something I can recommend to everyone. An experience that, unusually, surpassed expectations
I could not wait to explore the rest of the house so I went to the other end of the ground floor and found there even a living room with leather armchairs and yep … another fireplace. Next door was a bedroom and a bathroom. Then I went upstairs and there were no less than four bedrooms with attached bathrooms, including a suite and a master bedroom. Cool as I wasI immediately claimed the master bedroom and let the others in our party who arrived later fight for the other rooms. It was the nicest room I’ve ever lived in and listen to this: It had both walk in closet and ensuite. My two guilty pleasures … But I do not feel sorry for the others in the party!
The house has five bedrooms and then there is another smaller house on the property that can accommodate 4 persons. And I have not mentioned the best yet: The bottom of the large garden is an outdoor jacuzzi and a summer house with log stove. It really felt like the ultimate luxury to creep down into the bubbling hot water and for once able to enjoy a Scottish chilly and cold winter evening. Outdoor activities are really my thing about it is the way they are carried out :), when we got up the summer house had warmed up and we ate even one of our dinners there, between jacuzzi splashing.
We discovered new things during the whole weekend we were there. Table tennis table was used extensively and I appreciated all the fresh numbers of magazines and journals, and sneaked off to an easy chair in the farthest corner for some reading in peace. The house was so large that it took a while before the others found me hehe.
Unfortunately, we had bad luck with the weather, and besides Jacuzzi bathing there was not much outdoor activities. But it was ok as we wanted to be in the house as much as possible and we played games and took it easy. Do not go out or cook for yourself Gamefield has its own chef to come and cook for everyone. We cooked our own food, however,:)
Gamefield is ideally located in central Scotland and within an hour you can be in virtually any place, in a big city or in the middle of the Highlands. Perfect if you want a base when exploring Scotland on day trips. Activities nearby are in absolutely no shortage and there is something for everyone; hikes, some of the world’s best golf courses, whitewater rafting, fishing, hunting, horseback riding and much more, not to mention the spa and restaurant on the widely famous and star-studded Gleneagles. It was fixed so that we would get to visit two of the best tourist attractions in the area, the Famous Grouse distillery and chocolate manufacturer Iain Burnett, Highland Chocolatier. I will write a separate post about these two places but I can already tell that both were something special and that I can recommend both.
Yes, our Gamefield experience was really something special and something I can recommend to everyone. An experience that, unusually, surpassed expectations and was just so nice and luxurious as it looked in the pictures we saw before arrival. As regular readers know, a poorly built Scottish house is my worst pet hate, but as I said, now I have seen that there is hope! Just watch and learn from Gamefield, the house that has been given me confidence for the Scottish construction art.
